Moray playing the Laser Harp on stage at the Rondo Theatre in 2025

The Laser Harp is a spectacular instrument that has become a signature of Cephid's live performances. Originally built by Moray when he was a teenager inspired by bootlegs of Jean-Michel Jarre's concerts, it had never been used in a live setting until the Debut Cephid concert in 2025.

While none of the music on Sparks in the Darkness was written with the Laser Harp in mind, it fits so well into The Old Me that it's hard to imagine the piece without it. Its striking visual presence provides a stunning focal point for the finale of the show.

Moray's Laser Harp is a MIDI controller that uses lasers and sensors in the top of the frame to detect the position of the player's hands. While it can be used to control a wide range of sounds and effects, Moray normally uses it in conjuction with a custom patch on the ASM Hydrasynth. The strings are tuned to A3, Bb3, C4, D4, E4, F4, F#4, G4 and A4, allowing Moray to play melodies in A minor, A dorian and A phrygian.

The harp is collapsible so that it can be transported relatively easily and set up in as many venues as possible. It complies with BS EN 60825-1:2014, the standard for laser product safety, and Moray is continually working on improvements to both the visual and musical aspects of the instrument. As well as performances specifically focused on the harp, Moray is also looking at opportunities to use it for workshops and as an art installation. For more information, please get in touch.
